A great get-away

Looking for a quiet place to retreat from the rat-race and spend some time at the beach? Rent the Surfing Bear's Beach House!

This is a beautiful brand new 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 1600 sq. foot home in Nehalem Bay (three minutes south of Manzanita). Fully furnished with a king-sized log bed and walk in closet in master bedroom, two twin beds in the second bedroom and one queen bed in the third bedroom. A DVD player is ready in the living room; unlimited long-distance phone and free wi-fi throughout the house. Bikes, helmets, kayaks with life vests, and beach toys are available. Fire pit and outdoor table and chairs on back patio. Spacious kitchen and large island with seating around.

Our Beach House is located in a quiet neighborhood, tucked back near tranquil Nehalem Bay. A wildlife estuary surrounds the bay with bald eagles, beavers, and other wildlife. Elk are often seen roaming in your back yard.

Enjoy fun activities on your beach vacation? Crabbing, clamming, fishing and golf are close by, and shopping adventures await you in Cannon Beach, just fifteen minutes to the North. Or take a day-trip visit to Tillamook, about 26 miles to the South, and visit the Tillamook Creamery Association's Cheese Factory, where you can see how cheese is made and try a sample of Tillamook's best.

Dine alfresco on the patio, and when the sun goes down, enjoy a cozy evening toasting marshmallows around the fire pit.

If recreation close to home is more to your liking, launch your kayaks five minutes south at the Nehalem Bay boat dock. This is located next to Hal's Emporium (a great place to shop). The bay is very calm here with inlets to still waters where even children can practice paddling. Shopping is also fun in the quaint towns of Manzanita (five minutes North) and Nehalem.

The surf at Oswald West State Park was made for skim boards!

Perhaps nowhere else in the state is the restorative magic of Oregon so pervasive as it is on the coast. What some of the affluent seek, spending fortunes around the world, is available free for anyone who has the good sense and insight to spend a day or longer just being part the land-sea ambience. Peace of mind, tranquility, renewal—call it what you will; a feeling of self-forgetfulness and calm is the reward for the solitary beachcomber, the explorer of tide pools, rocks, and lonely stands of coast pine and spruce.

Oswald West State Park

Step out of your vehicle and into a place with natural beauty that truly inspires. Just a quarter mile from any of the parking areas to the beach, yet the rigors of everyday life are stripped away by the time your feet hit the sand. Although the walk is short, there are several different trails to the beach and lead you to the Cape Falcon overlook or to the Oregon Coast Trail. Be sure to pick up a map on the way into the park. All of the trails to the beach are through a mature forest; one trail follows the winding path of the Short Sands creek. This trail gives way to the spectacular view of the ocean and the creek meeting. This is your first glimpse of the ocean and Short Sands beach.

The beach is nestled in a cove that provides you with a feeling of total privacy. Popular with surfboarders and boogie boarders, the beach is always alive with activity. Surrounded by the mountains, the beach at Oswald West gives you a sense of being transported away from the trials of everyday life. Lose yourself; find Oswald West State Park.

Looking down from Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain into the Nehalem Bay area.

Looking down from Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain into the Nehalem Bay area.

Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain

Neah-Kah-Nie in the Tillamook language can be translated as “the place of the supreme deity.”

A legend, dating back to the mid-1800s and the first Hudson's Bay Co. employees to arrive in the area, claims the mountain conceals a lost treasure, hidden by Spanish sailors in the late 16th century. There are various versions of the legend, but the most common ones involve a group of sailors carrying a chest up the hillside, then digging a hole and lowering the treasure inside. As the story goes, one of the sailors then plunges his sword into one of the men with them, apparently an African slave, and his body was then thrown in on top of the treasure; the idea being, Native Americans would not disturb a man's grave, so keeping the treasure under a dead man would prevent the Native Americans—who, in most versions of the story were watching the activity closely from nearby—from digging it up.

Tide Pools

Tide pools are tiny, unique, ever-changing ocean microcosms where sea creatures live and rest from the pounding of the ocean's roar. Each tide pool you find will be host to strange and interesting aquatic plants and animals that are as different as the people viewing them. Take time to discover what others will just pass on by.
